The New Beetle, with its water (cooling) of the engine in the front of the front-drive car, is related to the original only in name, the general shape and some styling cues.

In an attempt to curb the trade of gray market imports in the UK, in 1998 VW made available a limited number of New Beetles to those who had signed for a web campaign a few years before. These, officially the first New Beetles in the UK, were available in full UK specification (albeit only in left-hand drive) and began to arrive in the UK in April 1999. Right-hand drive versions arrived in early 2000, and have sold quite well
